St. Saviour’s Hindi Church

9 Mirza Ghalib Street, Kolkata 700 016 : Sunday Worship Service Timing – 10:30am

Built in 1849, St. Saviour’s Church, situated at 9, Haji Mohammed Square in Central Calcutta, belongs to the Calcutta Diocese Trust Association (CDTA). The United Society for the propagation of the Gospel (USPG) began a Hindi congregation from the Diocese of Chota Nagpur and built the Church for them. Later, a Bengali congregation was permitted to worship there till a church was built for them with funds provided by Bishop George Lefroy. In 1936, the Bengali congregation moved to St. George’s Church, erected in the memory of Bishop Lefroy.
The Rev. G. Siromoni (Chief Accountant of the National Council of the YMCA), who taught at Bishop’s College, was also a permanent deacon in the Hindi Congregation at St. Saviour’s between 1938 and 1940. That time the Tamil Congregation was also formed which used the Parish Hall as their place of worship. Funds for the Parish Hall built on CDTA land came from the Tamil Congregation. They are responsible for the maintenance of both the church and the hall. Though the Church was originally meant for the Hindi congregation from Chota Nagpur Diocese, the Tamil Congregation was allowed by the Bishop to use St. Saviour’s Church after the Bengali congregation joined worship. After some time, the Tamil Congregation was allowed to run a day school at the Parish Hall.
