On 19th June 1963, The then Bishop of Calcutta, George Edward Lynch Cotton wrote a letter to Sir William Dent working in the Bengal Civil Service, suggesting the establishment of a native Christian Church and a school at Kidderpore, emphasising the teaching of English at the school. This is how St. Barnabas church became a reality.
The inspection in memoriam to William Dent honoured his as the founder of the mission in 1863. He made over a large sum of money to Bishop Cotton out of which the site and parsonage were bought in 1866 and the Church was built in 1867. The Church was dedicated to St. Barnabas and was
consecrated by Bishop Robert Milman on 23rd December’ 1867.
William Dent died on 6th December 1882. Rev. Madhusudan Seal became the Vicar. He was a Christian convert and later he became a priest. The church building was built under the supervision of Rev. Madhusudan Seal and a school was also started as per the advice of Bishop Cotton and the same was named St. Barnabas M. E. School. Rev. Madhusudhan Seal, in his later life, joined as a missionary in the Sindh area (Present day Pakistan).
