St. Mary’s Church is well known as Bengali Cathedral. After building St. Paul’s Cathedral, Bishop Daniel Wlison, the first Metropolitan of India, created a Trust Fund, which he named the St. Paul’s Cathedral Endowment Fund. The Cathedral Mission started working with the help of the SPG Mission. Rev. Harihar Sandel, a pioneer missionary started worshipping in the Cathedral with a few Christian employees in July 1858 and gradually built a small congregation. It was later decided to build up a separate church for their worship.
Rev. Aghar Nath Banerjee, the second Cathedral missionary succeeded Rev. Harihar Sandel in January 1888. Bishop Edward Ralph Johnson, the fourth Metropolitan of India, consecrated this Church on the 16th of February, 1889 as St. Mary’s Church.
The dedication festival of the Church is observed on 2nd February, the feast of the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1907 Rev. Aghar Nath Banerjee was made a Canon of St. Paul’s Cathedral. He was the first Indian to receive this distinction.
