St. NICHOLAS CHURCH

2, Nimak Mahal Road, Kolkata 700 043 : Sunday Worship Service Timing – 10:00 am

St. Nicholas’ Church on 2, Nimak Mahal Road, next to the Marine Club in the Kolkata Port area had long been gone into virtual oblivion. The erstwhile Anglican Diocese had used this Church to minister as a Port Chaplaincy to the seafarers who visited Calcutta Port in the ships. Being a property under The Diocese of Calcutta with The Calcutta Diocesan Trust Association (Pvt) as the holding Trust, it was only when our Bishop, The Rt. Revd. Dr. Paritosh Canning enquired the whereabouts of the Church that it came into limelight. The lease given to Mizo Presbyterian Synod, about 30 years back, has long expired. Under the prudent guidance and foresight of our Bishop, the Diocese of Calcutta reclaimed the Church from the Mizo Presbyterian Church.

The Congregation of the Church (Formerly of Mizo Presbyterian Church) of about 150 persons (Bengali, Hindi, Oriya and Telugu speaking) voluntarily joined into The Diocese of Calcutta. Pastor Biswajit Lima, who looked after the Congregation to offer Pastoral care also resigned from the Mizo Presbyterian Church and joined The Diocese of Calcutta as an Evangelist and he will continue to be engaged with the congregation to nurture and nourish. A Service of Reception into the Diocese of Calcutta was held on Sunday, 14th April, 2024 in the Church led by Bishop Dr. Canning. Diocesan Office-Bearers, Clergy, Heads of Institutions and guests joined in the worship. The Congregation members took the oath of allegiance to the Diocese, its rules, regulations and discipline and to the spiritual authority of The Bishop of Calcutta. Thereafter The Bishop received the already baptized as Communicant members of the Diocese of Calcutta with the laying on of hands. Our Bishop celebrated and preached in the bilingual service of the Lord’s Supper in Hindi. He spoke on the calling of Philip and Nathanael from John 1:43-51. He said that Nathanael was one in whom there was no deceit and he would see heaven opened and angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man. The Bishop said that Jesus knows all about us. If we believe in Jesus we will see great and mighty things being done in our lives. The Congregation received Holy Communion. After the Service all were welcomed by The Bishop to a joyful time of refreshment and fellowship. Under the able guidance and advice of our Bishop, this Church and its premises with a two-storied building are getting a facelift with the repair and refurbishment of an office, a full-fledged Diocesan Guest House and a Community Hall with modern amenities.
Port Chaplaincy was another ministry of The Diocese of Calcutta which was discontinued more than two decades back. We thank our Bishop that under his care, concern and consideration the Post Chaplaincy Ministry was revived from April, 2024 in collaboration with UK based Mission to The Seafarers. Pastor Joel Das has been appointed by Bishop as Port Chaplain to offer Pastoral care to the sailors arriving in the ships from all over the world to the Kolkata Port.
We thank our Bishop for all his initiatives and endeavours in enlarging the Mission and Ministry of The Diocese of Calcutta to newer horizons every passing day while seeking the Kingdom of God and His righteousness for His greater Glory.
