The St. James’ Church was conceptualised to cater to the spiritual needs of the local people of Baranagar. It is now under the Diocese of Calcutta, Church of North India but has a CMS background. Started by the ‘Janana Mission’ (Ladies Mission), the Church has celebrated its centenary God’s blessings.
The widows and orphans of this area together with the CEZMS Missionaries – Lucy Watney, Josephine Annie Evans, Annie Louisa Ashwin and other ladies, started regular fellowship in Dakshineswar, the area native to Ramkrishna. The Industrial Orphanage trained many skilled labourers in this area. The CEZMS School educated the local children. Unfortunately both are now closed. Non-Christians visit the Church morning and evening everyday, as they have immense faith in this Church. There is no other church within ten miles. At Christmas time, huge crowds of people come from far and wide to light candles and pray, so much so that the place needs police arrangement to control the crowd.
