The Chinsurah Church, located in the heart of the Chinsurah town was founded in 1825. It was earlier called the Free Church and belonged to UCNI (United Church of North India) before the church union.
Previously there were three churches, namely the Dutch Church (High Church) which no longer exists with a portion of it taken over by Mohosin College Chinsurah; Chinsurah Church (Free Church), now the CNI Church; and Armenian Church (near Magultuli Lane, Chinsurah), which is still well maintained.
Initially the Chinsurah Church received financial aid from England.
The first priest, Rev. W. H. Michael John served up to 1848. He was followed by other priests like Rev. W. S. Mickey, Rev. Elenter Miller, Rev. J. S. Beaumont. In the year 1871, the first Bengali priest, Rev. P. K. Chatterjee took over as priest. He was also a teacher at Chinsurah Duff School, which was founded by the great missionary Rev. Alexander Duff. Rev. Sudhanshu Ghosh built the parsonage in the Church compound in 1958, which is still there. The church building was divided into two parts with one part used as the library and the other part used as the place of worship and prayer. Rev. S. C. Dey removed the partition and the entire portion came to be used for church services. At the entrance of the church on the right hand side was a big cannon, which was handed over to the Government in 1963. There is a small mission property behind the Chinsurah Emambara hospital. On that property there is a pond and a two storied building, which was purchased by the Government for a paltry sum of Rs. 6,500. The Church has a big mission house compound, which is very close to the river Ganges. In yesteryears some of the priests and evangelists, both male and female, lived in that mission house. Presently the mission house is used for the Chinsurah Child Development Project under the Diocese of Calcutta, sponsored by an organisation called Compassion.
The Church has its own burial ground. Even today the Chinsurah Church is receiving a grant from the Danish Government through the Diocese of Calcutta. In the burial ground there are many graves of Dutch people who lived and died at Chinsurah. Local Christian members of the Chinsurah Church and of the neighbouring area use this burial ground.
Under the Chinsurah Church, there is an out-station church at Triveni called Triveni Tissues Congregation, as they do not have their own church building for service. Sunday service is held in the residences of various members by rotation. The people of Triveni Tissues do attend major festivals at Chinsurah Church. When Rev. Samar Bairagi (retired Bishop) was pastor of the Chinsurah Church (1961 – 1970), he started the English service once a month. All English speaking believers working at the Dunlop factory as Managers, foreman and supervisors and also at Triveni Tissue, attended the English service with their families.
