CNI Wesleyan Church

15, Sudder Street, Kolkata-700 016 : Sunday Worship Service Timing – 11:30am

The Sudder street Church was formerly known as the Wesleyan Methodist Church and is now renamed as C.N.I. Wesleyan Church. Sometime in1862 Rev. James Broodbent, who was the Chaplain at Fort William and a Wesleyan Methodist missionary, contemplated the erection of a Chapel in Sudder Street. He along with Mr H.G. Highfield, set about the making of this Chapel which was to be used both by the military personnel as well as civilians then residing in Calcutta and Barrackpore. Since they were unable to raise the necessary funds from overseas for this purpose, they had to depend on a mortgage to help erect this Chapel. This Church, by their determined efforts was erected in 1866 for the worship of both civilians as well as the military garrison.
The Church, during the India Pakistan war, took up an active role in rehabilitating the Bangladesh refugees. This was initiated by the Rev. John Hastings, the Rev Kenyon E. Wright and Rev John Claphan. This was also the first ecumenical effort where the Church of England churches came to work jointly for the refugees. In 1970 the Wesleyan Methodist Church joined the Church of North India, a United Church. Since most of the British forces had left this Church, the congregation became thin with few Indian members. Even though today, this is a small congregation it has a Mission to minister the spiritual needs of the people, staying in the vicinity and to visitors who come from overseas.
At present the Church has only one service in the morning. Every first and third Sunday the Holy Communion is served. The Women’s fellowship meets every first Sunday of the month. They organize sometimes a special service to bring awareness amongst the women. Apart from this Women’s Fellowship for Christian Service also visits different Old Age Homes and Children’s Homes and distribute food items and clothes.
The Pastorate Committee meets quite regularly and tries to keep the congregation vibrant and active.
